Petition

Establish Environmental Standards for the Hardrock Mining Industry

Empowered By

Earthworks is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting communities and the environment from the impacts of irresponsible mineral and energy development while seeking sustainable solutions.

About the Petition

Today, the outdated General Mining Law of 1872 governs activities related to hardrock mining on federal lands. This 135-year-old law contains no provisions to protect the surrounding environment. Under the Abandoned Mine Lands Cleanup and Taxpayer Fairness Act, pollution would be monitored and surface and groundwater would be protected from toxic discharge and erosion.

Stand with organizations like Earthworks and urge Congress to cosponsor the Abandoned Mine Lands Cleanup and Taxpayer Fairness Act: defend our environment and wildlife from hazardous mining pollution.

To: U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate

We, the undersigned, urge you to support the Abandoned Mine Lands Cleanup and Taxpayer Fairness Act. The EPA released a report describing the hardrock mining industry as the nation’s largest toxic polluter. This Bill would protect national parks and monuments from irresponsible hardrock mining by establishing new environmental standards, and institute a fund to clean up abandoned mines.

I stand with organizations like Earthworks in urging Congress to cosponsor the Abandoned Mine Lands Cleanup and Taxpayer Fairness Act: protect our environment and wildlife from hazardous mining pollution.

Sincerely,
