Help Prevent LGBTQ Suicide

About the Pledge

LGBT teens are four times more likely, and questioning youth are three times more likely, to attempt suicide as their straight peers. While it may be easier for young people to come out and be accepted than it was in the past, many teens and young adults still face abuse, discrimination and barriers to mental health care.

But don’t lose hope! Depression is treatable and suicide is preventable.

We can’t sit by as more LGBTQ youths take their own lives. Stand with The Trevor Project and pledge to help prevent LGBTQ suicide.

I pledge to support The Trevor Project and do my part to prevent LGBTQ suicide. If I know someone who might have suicidal thoughts, I pledge to:

  • Understand and identify the many signs of depression and the possibility of suicide.
  • Remind myself that I am not responsible for anyone who chooses to take their own life.
  • Connect the person to confidential suicide prevention resources, such as the 24-hour Trevor Lifeline (866-488-7386) and TrevorSpace.org.
  • Alert a supportive, trusted adult, such as a parent or guidance counselor. Many other people care about my friend just as much as me, so I shouldn’t have to be alone when helping someone in a crisis.
  • Accept and listen to the person’s feelings and take them seriously, including being non-judgmental, validating their feelings, believing what they are saying, and showing genuine concern.
  • Respond if the person has a plan to attempt suicide and tell someone I trust.

If I’m an LGBTQ youth with thoughts of suicide, I pledge to:

  • Seek immediate help from the Trevor Lifeline (866-488-7386), which is free and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Find trained, volunteer counselors to talk to through TrevorChat.
  • Connect with other LGBTQ young people through TrevorSpace.org.
  • Consult Ask Trevor for non-urgent questions and information about sexual orientation and gender identity.
