About the Petition

Help us urge California's leaders to get kid-harming pesticides off the table.

The science is very clear: Children's developing brains and nervous systems can be harmed by exposure to certain pesticides—even at the very low levels commonly found on food. The insecticide chlorpyrifos is one such chemical, and its use is now under review in California.

Urge the Department of Pesticide Regulation to take swift action on chlorpyrifos to protect children in California.

To: Brian Leahy, Director, California Department of Pesticide Regulation

As the science on the harms of the insecticide chlorpyrifos continues to grow stronger, we look to your department to take real and rapid steps to protect public health. We urge you to help California be a leader in prioritizing the health and well-being of children. Your department can make this happen by canceling all uses of chlorpyrifos and providing support for growers to transition to safer alternatives.

Allowing continued use of chemicals known to impair the cognitive abilities of our children is not a good idea, and your department has the power to stop it. The science linking this pesticide with harm to children’s developing nervous systems is extremely clear. Recent studies, including new science from the UC Davis MIND Institute, have linked prenatal chlorpyrifos exposure to

  • Increased risk of learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorder;
  • Low birth weights and reduced head circumference of newborns, a factor related to children’s subsequent cognitive abilities;
  • Reduced perceptual reasoning and working memory and poorer intellectual development in seven-year-olds;-- poorer mental and motor development at three years of age.

In 2011, more than 1.2 million pounds of chlorpyrifos’ active ingredient were used in California fields. Children in rural areas experience chronic, low-level exposure to this pesticide, and children throughout the state—and across the country—are also exposed to chlorpyrifos through residues of the pesticide on food.

We urge you to take swift action to protect California children by removing this pesticide from the market and mobilizing resources to support farmers to transition away from chlorpyrifos.

We look forward to your leadership on this important issue, which will move us all closer to a shared vision of a healthy California.

Sincerely,
